Banjo Lessons

"Am I holding it right Granny?" Ambrosia said with a slightly nervous smile as she sat up straight, an old banjo sitting in her lap. Granny Smith smiled and nodded, "perfect, now let's play some music, try a few basic chords and we'll go from there" Granny said. Ambrosia nodded and slowly ran her hoof over the five strings of the banjo, resulting in a soft twang of banjo chords ringing through the barn, Granny's ears perked up at the sound and she let out a soft sigh, "I sure do love that sound" she said with a gentle smile.

"Now what Granny?" Ambrosia asked, "try playing the little piece I taught you yesterday" Granny said quietly. Ambrosia then strummed the strings of the banjo and slowly began to play the chorus chords of you are my sunshine. Ambrosia's chords were slow and unsure sounding as she was still learning, but nonetheless beautiful as they rang through the barn. Once Ambrosia finished the part of the song that she knew, Granny have her a gentle pat on the shoulder, "that was beautiful Ambrosia, now that's enough for today, we'll practice some more tomorrow" Granny said as she took the banjo and set it against an upright beam in the barn, "okay" Ambrosia nodded and rushed off to go help her mother and father out on the farm.

After Ambrosia left, Granny pulled the banjo into her lap and placed a shaky hoof on the strings, then she softly strummed the strings and began to play a piece of Ashokan Farewell, a song she still hadn't taught Ambrosia. As she strummed the chords she sighed, remembering how her own mother had taught her this song right before she passed, as granny planned to do with Ambrosia.

When Granny first passed away, playing the banjo was hard for Ambrosia because it seemed to just be a reminder that Granny was no longer around, but Faith convinced her that each time she plays, it's just another memorial of granny Smith’s legacy of practically creating Ponyville itself, so now Ambrosia plays the banjo proudly every day.
